Solo was born in Richland, Washington on July 30, 1981 and began to learn how to play soccer from a young age thanks to her father. However, family issues arose when her parents divorced when she was aged 6 culminating in her father being arrested for alleged kidnapping after her took Hope and her brother Marcus to a hotel for a number of days after claiming he was taking them to a baseball game. Happily, the pair reconciled while Hope studied at the University of Washington.
Hope also maintained her passion for soccer during this period, playing as a forward for Richland High School. During her tenure there, she scored 109 goals and led to team to a trio of league titles between 1996 and 1998, plus a state championship. It was this period, in particular, that marked her out as a player of great potential.
Solo began to play as a goalkeeper during her time playing soccer in college for the Washington Huskies, claiming that the intellectual side of goalkeeping in regards to tactics and play appealed to her much more than her previous role as a forward.
She soon found that she had an aptitude for the position and, following graduation, began playing the game professionally. She played for a number of European clubs in the following years, including Olympique Lyonnais, before coming back to the United States. She had played for a number of teams during this tenure, including Atlanta Beat and magicJack, however she is currently plying her trade for Seattle Reign FC.
While she has had a fairly undistinguished career in the domestic game when it comes to honours, her international career has been much more impressive. As part of the United States national squad, Solo has won a number of honours. These include a World Cup winner’s medal in 2015 in addition to two Olympic Gold medals in both the 2008 and 2012 games. Given that the international women’s game has much more exposure than many of the domestic leagues around the world, these achievements have allowed Solo to build and maintain a reputation as one of the finest female goalkeepers in the modern game.
This, in turn, has allowed her to make appearances on a number of television shows in addition to various magazine photoshoots. She has also written an autobiography about her life and career, named Solo: A Memoir of Hope, which was released in 2012.
Solo is currently the first choice goalkeeper for the United States national squad and is continues to play domestically for Seattle Reign FC.
Hope has won a number of awards outside of the sport of soccer, including the Phoenix Mercury Woman of Inspiration in 2012.
